Erik Matti’s ‘On the Job: The Missing 8’ Selected as Philippines' entry to the Oscars

Updated: May 10, 2023

Award-winning film director Erik Matti is once again on track for cinema honors as his film “On the Job: The Missing 8” has been selected as the Philippines’ official entry to the 2023 Oscar Awards.

Co-produced by Globe Studios (now known as ANIMA) together with Reality MM Studios and HBO Asia, the crime thriller explores the shadowy world of gun-for-hire rings that carry out political assassinations for those in power, and the threat that journalists face in their role as truth tellers.

The feature film written by Michiko Yamamoto, has garnered critical acclaim locally and abroad for its realistic portrayal of what goes on in the underbelly of the Philippines society and the violence that mires the country’s politics. Conceived and directed by Erik Matti, the film in English and Filipino is filmed in the Philippines starring Joel Torre, John Arcilla, Piolo Pascual, Dennis Trillo, Gerald Anderson, Joey Marquez, Dante Rivero, Christopher De Leon and Lotlot De Leon. John Arcilla also won Best Actor for his performance as ‘Sisoy Salas’ at the 78th Venice Film Festival in 2021 – making him the first Filipino actor to take home the prestigious Volpi Cup.

“We are proud of this film. It has always been our goal to bring this type of work to the global stage. We hope this inspires more filmmakers here in the Philippines,” says Reality MM Studios’ founder and “On the Job: The Missing 8” executive producer Ronald “Dondon” Monteverde. He adds that the journey in making the film was “challenging but rewarding.”

“Production of this film happened during the rise of the disinformation networks. We saw how these fake news peddlers greatly impacted society, and how the media was vilified. And it’s not just happening in the Philippines - it’s relevant globally, even today,” Matti says.

On The Job: The Missing 8 marks the artistic vision of Erik Matti whose career has been replete with the honest portrayal of the Filipino in their struggle for dignity, honor and respect. We are honored to be a part of Erik’s creative journey and ecstatic about the Oscars entry,” said KROMA Entertainment CEO Ian Monsod. The film started production back in 2018, only to be completed in 2020 in the middle of the pandemic with theaters closed. “On The Job: The Missing 8” will have its theatrical run exclusively at the following Ayala Cinemas from November 2 to 8: Glorietta 4, Circuit Makati, Market Market, Feliz, Marquee, Manila Bay, Capitol Central and Trinoma.
